Welcome to B.E.A.R.S. preschool! Our mission is to provide an early childhood education and development to children between 2 1/2 and 5 years of age in a professional, loving, Christian setting.

At B.E.A.R.S., we believe in developing a balanced foundation of spiritual, social, intellectual, emotional, and physical aspects for each unique child, so that all B.E.A.R.S. children reach their greatest potential.

B.E.A.R.S. offers a variety of classes designed to meet the needs of your preschooler. Depending on your child's age, we offer classes that meet 2-5 days a week. For some age groups, we offer either morning or afternoon classes.

Our curriculum focuses on encouraging learning and growth within a structured and loving environment. We fill the days with music and song, arts and crafts, books and stories, and laughing and learning. The objective of our curriculum is to assist in the development of self-discipline, self-confidence and self-esteem.

  • The Cubs program is for an older 2-1/2-year-old or younger 3-year-old.
  • Must be 2 by March 31 preceding Fall entry into preschool
  • Limited to 8 children per teacher
  • Meets one or two mornings per week (parent preference)
  • The Panda (2 mornings per week) or Koala (3 days per week, choose mornings or afternoons) program may be your 3-year-old child's first experience with formal preschool education.
  • Must be 3 by September 30 and completely potty trained
  • Teacher/student ratio of 1:10
  • The Kare Bears (3 mornings per week) and Teddy Bears (4 days per week, choose mornings or afternoons) programs for 4-year-olds are designed as a second year of preschool experience that includes classroom routines and themes that encourage exploration and reinforce literacy readiness.
  • Must be 4 by September 30
  • Teacher/student ratio of 1:12
  • Polar Bears is a Pre-K program for 5-year-olds who are old enough to enter Kindergarten, but are being given the gift of time
  • Curriculum is workshop-based and also includes small- and large-group instruction and interaction
  • 5 days per week, choose mornings or afternoons
  • Must be eligible for Kindergarten or 5 by December 31
  • Teacher/student ratio of 1:14

Enrichment classes are a wonderful supplement to your child's learning experience at B.E.A.R.S. The extended class time allows our extra-creative teacher to have lunch with the children, then have fun as they explore different topics together.

4 and 5-year-olds can register to attend one enrichment class per week and each session lasts 5 weeks.

Dates for Enrichment for the 2012-2013 School Year

Session 4 - February 18-March 22

Session 5 - April 9-May 10

The parent-run Stop, Drop, & Go program allows parents or caregivers to drop their child or children off at B.E.A.R.S. without having to get out of the car. Less congestion in the parking lot contributes to parking lot safety, as well as keeping siblings safe, dry and warm in their car seats.

Because Stop, Drop, & Go is run by parents, if your child(ren) participate in the program, you will be asked to volunteer. Usually, this involves 1-2 days per month and requires 20-25 minutes each volunteer day.

Volunteer responsibilities include:

  • Setting up the cones in the parking lot
  • Getting children out of cars
  • Directing children to their classrooms and teachers
Please check the Monthly volunteer calendar to see when you are scheduled to volunteer.

Pack & Play is a lunch program provided Monday through Friday for all children except Cubs. It is a great time for children to gather from 11:15 to 12:15 p.m. to have lunch together, and learn about how to eat good food to keep their bodies healthy and strong.

After lunch is eaten, the session incorporates different types of organized physical activity.

Pack & Play Policies

  • Lunches are provided by the parent, and need to have their child's name printed clearly on them. Lunches should not contain glass bottles or anything that would need heating or microwaving. Please provide a nutritious meal.
  • Morning session children will be escorted to lunch by one of their teachers. Afternoon session children can be taken directly to Pack & Play by their parent.
  • Pack & Play is offered in three sessions throughout the school year: Fall, Winter and Spring. You must re-register for each session. No one is automatically carried over from the previous session, and each family must reregister at the end of each session to allow all families an equal opportunity to participate.
  • The fee for Pack & Play sessions is $8 per day. Once you commit to a session, you are responsible for payment for that session whether your child attends every day or not. Billing statements will be sent home with each family.
  • If you request to discontinue or change days, a waiting list is maintained; additions, changes or withdrawals can only be made if there is a child to fill your position.
  • As a reminder, when you pack your child's lunch for Pack & Play, it is required by licensing that you include foods from all four food groups in order to meet the recommended daily dietary allowance. A well-rounded, balanced lunch will contribute to your child's overall health and well-being.

Pack & Play Food Choices

The importance of nutrition and healthy choices are emphasized in our Pack & Play program. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services states that:

". . . a meal shall meet one-third of the recommended daily dietary allowances as specified by the United States department of agriculture. This includes at a minimum, one serving of fluid milk, one serving of meat or meat alternative, two servings of vegetables and/or fruits (one serving of each is recommended) and one serving of bread or grains."

Thank you for your support as we work to keep nutrition an important part of your child's Pack & Play experience. Please send a lunch with your child(ren) that includes foods from all of the four main food groups listed on the new food pyramid, which includes:

  • Grains
  • Fruits & Vegetables
  • Milk & Dairy Products
  • Meats, Beans and Fish

Spring Session - April 9-May 10

Individual Classroom Music

B.E.A.R.S. preschool includes music as part of your child's classroom program. In addition to our daily songs, once a week our inspiring, energetic music teacher, "Miss Leslie," fills the classroom with joyous songs and motions. Music is a natural and important part of a young child's growth and development. Early interaction with music positively affects the quality of all children's lives. Successful experiences in music help all children bond emotionally and intellectually with others through creative expression in song, rhythmic movement, and listening experiences. Music in early childhood creates a foundation upon which future learning is built. Music education for young children involves a developmentally appropriate program of singing, moving, listening, creating, playing instruments, and responding to visual and verbal representations of sound.

Group Music

Group Music at B.E.A.R.S. is a fun time for the children. Once a week all the classes come together to sing, dance, and do fingerplays in a large group. The children enjoy singing new songs, familiar songs, and familiar songs with new lyrics. We always have live music and plenty of creative movements with all of our songs and fingerplays.

Music Performances

Our school performs two fantastic concerts every school year in the sanctuary; one at Christmas time and one in the Spring. It's amazing to see all the children have learned in their music classes, and the video recordings from these performances are packed with truly priceless memories!

At least once a month B.E.A.R.S. invites guest speakers to share their expertise with each of our classes. From this year's speakers we learned:

  • Fire safety from the UA Fire Department—They taught us not to be scared of all of their cool fire gear.
  • The importance of giving to those less fortunate from the Mid Ohio Food Bank—They conducted a canned food drive at Thanksgiving.
  • Nutrition information from a nutritionist who discussed how to make healthy food choices.
  • Yoga and the importance of physical activity from Meghan Harder—Wow! We are so flexible!
  • Hibernating Habits of Bears from Highland Metro Parks—We wore our pajamas for Hibernation day and even touch real bear fur!
  • Dental health from Dr. Fair—Now we all know the importance of brushing and flossing. We even received toothbrushes and mini hourglasses to make sure we spend enough time brushing!
  • All about cold blooded critters from Battelle Darby Creek. We saw frogs, turtles and snakes and even got to touch them if we chose to!
  • Child safety from Officer Heather Galli who took our fingerprints and photos to help keep us safe. She let us try on handcuffs, too!/li

B.E.A.R.S. Preschool offers many special events that enhance each child's learning experience and to provide a strong sense of community for B.E.A.R.S. families.

Open House for Families & Parent Information Meeting

In the morning we give children an opportunity, with their parents, to see their classrooms and meet their teachers as well as make some new friends! This helps to ease anxiety for the first day of school. In the evening, only the parents return for an information meeting to discuss the upcoming school year.

Christmas Musical Performance

What a special evening it is when the children perform the Christmas music they've learned in the sanctuary! The memories are priceless!

VIP Night

VIP night is an opportunity for our students to enjoy a very special evening at school with a Very Important Person in their life. This could be a parent, grandparent, neighbor or friend. Children show off their artwork, show the VIP the classroom, take pictures, make a craft, eat a snack, and have a fun evening playing games together in the large muscle room. Each VIP night has a different theme—Sports, Circus, Movies, etc. We've even had Brutus and the Buckeye Cheerleaders make an appearance at one VIP night!

Spring Musical Performance / Art Auction

Another special music performance for the whole family to enjoy! Spring artwork is displayed in the large muscle room for all to see. There also is an optional, small silent auction in large muscle room as well as a final opportunity to buy tickets for our class basket raffle. The raffle drawing takes place the following day in the classrooms.

Year End Picnic

This event is a great time to play at a local park with friends, have lunch, take pictures, and make plans to play together over the summer!

Why We Chose B.E.A.R.S.

"We chose B.E.A.R.S. preschool because of its reputation in the community and the referral of other B.E.A.R.S. families. We have been attending the music programs and other events at B.E.A.R.S. long before our own children were old enough to enroll. Once I became a B.E.A.R.S. parent I was able to experience first-hand the wonderful teachers, programs and community that makes up B.E.A.R.S. We look forward to many more years as part of the B.E.A.R.S. family."
—Angela Lanctot, Parent

"My girls have attended BEARS Preschool every year since 2007. This preschool has the highest quality program. The teachers create a safe, energetic, loving and nurturing environment where each child is made to feel special. I believe that the first step in making your child a lifelong learner should begin with BEARS Preschool. My girls have been well prepared to begin their primary school education after completing their classes at BEARS. "
—Laura Garish, Parent

"As a parent we want the best for our kids. I feel like B.E.A.R.S. is that place for my family. All three of my children have been students at B.E.A.R.S. The teachers at B.E.A.R.S. have made each of my kids feel special and unique. The atmosphere is so positive and engaging. I feel so lucky to have found B.E.A.R.S. and we treasure the entire B.E.A.R.S. family."
—Katie Druhan, Parent

"We have been with BEARS since it's doors first opened and have loved every moment! There could be no better place to start your child's education than with the very special teachers that everyday challenge, inspire and treat each student as a unique and special individual. We are very fortunate to have such an excellent preschool in our neighborhood that teaches values that help children to become successful members of the community."
—Shelly Casey, Parent

"Even though there is a reputable preschool two blocks from our house, we choose to make the short drive to B.E.A.R.S. because of the exceptional, caring teachers who do such an amazing job making every child feel safe and loved. Our oldest son has severe allergies, and the teachers at B.E.A.R.S. were so experienced and understanding; they had no hesitation about putting together a great plan to keep him safe. Little did I know at the time, but it turned out to be the best decision for all of our children. The teachers truly care about each and every child, and the B.E.A.R.S. graduates are very well-prepared for kindergarten."
—Sally Hackett, Parent

"After attending another local preschool, we decided to move to a preschool that was closer to our new home. After careful consideration, we chose BEARS. We were blown away by the teachers, the curriculum in the Polar Bears class, and the overall energy of the preschool. The teachers at BEARS not only teach a curriculum that readies preschoolers for Kindergarten, but they also teach important life lessons by instilling the importance of treating others with kindness and respect. Our children have gained a great deal of confidence from BEARS Preschool. We are very lucky to have such a great preschool so close to home!"
—Stori Rex, Parent

"I carefully interviewed the different preschools, and B.E.A.R.S. was the one that stood out and shined above the rest. I found that the parents that actually took the time to interview schools chose B.E.A.R.S. preschool above the others. We thought "out of the box" when choosing my daughters preschool. I knew if B.E.A.R.S. impressed me, that it would impress my daughters and create an "above and beyond" fun learning environment. It seemed as if the B.E.A.R.S. curriculum would better prepare my daughters for kindergarten."
—Mindy Thomas, Parent

"We searched high and low for the 'right' preschool since we moved to Upper Arlington....When we observed the Koala class for the first time, we knew we found what we were looking for. It was the perfect combination of learning and fun. Mrs. English, the director of the preschool, is energetic, affectionate, intelligent, social, wonderful at multi-tasking, and determined. She obviously knows how to select the best teachers for her school....The teachers here are conscientious enough to know the day-to-day happenings of each student. Each teacher plays an integral role in making BEARS an exceptional school. They are passionate about our children and our children reciprocate their adoration....The cozy atmosphere of the school and the close relationship between teachers and parents make the school a natural extension of the family. Excellence, dedication, and love are what make BEARS an exceptional place. We have been so fortunate to have found a gem in the heart of Upper Arlington."
—Kristi Stummer, Parent

"SO many things -- the teachers are really the best. No matter what age, they know all the children and make the school experience so rewarding and fun. I have the most cherished memories of our preschool experience."
—Courtney Kramer, Parent

"Oh my stars...the teachers and the programs. The teachers are passionate and take pride in being the best. They exude positive energy and nurture each child's capacity to learn. I can see the B.E.A.R.S. Teachers shaping my child's future right before my eyes. The relationship that exists between the teacher, child and parent is unlike any other preschool. There is an easy feeling in talking to the teachers about my child's development. I feel at home as a parent when I walk the halls of B.E.A.R.S.. I certainly have to include the V.I.P. program as well. What other preschool has The Ohio State University Cheerleaders and Brutus perform for the preschool?"
—Mindy Thomas, Parent

"Bears is special to me because of the continuity of the teachers each year. My son, who is now almost 11, started his first preschool experience with some of the same teachers who teach here at B.E.A.R.S.. My daughter has also gone through B.E.A.R.S. with familiar faces and the same TLC that my son was given."
—Mrs. Keyes, B.E.A.R.S. Teacher
